After the bass player Billy Sheehan left David Lee Roth in 1988, he began piecing together a new band with the help of Mike Varney from shrapnel Records, a label specialized in the shredding genre. He recruited Eric Martin, singer of rock-oriented solo and relied on the soul, and soon added guitarist and drummer Gilbert Torpey. Gilbert has become a highly respected guitarist who has released two albums to his Los Angeles-based band Racer X. Torpey came to California from Arizona, and toured with several high-profile artists, especially Robert Plant.
The newly formed band hired Herbie Herbert, former manager of Journey, Europe, and Santana, to become their manager. In 1989, they signed with Atlantic Records and released their self-titled debut the same year. The record does not get a rock band in the United States mainstream audiences, but success in Japan. In June 1990, the group toured America opening for Rush.
The second album in 1991 Mr Big Lean Into It, is a market success, especially the two ballads, "To Be With You" (number one song in fifteen countries) and "Just Take My Heart, and" Green-Tinted Sixties Mind ". They toured the UK in April and May 1991 and again in 1992, released a live album, Mr. Big Live, in 1992. For three nights, they were the opening band for Aerosmith at London's Wembley Arena.
In 1993, another ballad, a cover of "Cat Stevens Wild World", (from their third album, Bump Ahead) peaked at # 27 on the Billboard Hot 100. The band also contributed the soundtrack for the Sega Mega CD release of The Amazing Spider-Man vs. Kingpin. They released Hey Man in 1995. The song "Take Cover" included on the soundtrack to Mega Man cartoon series. Although the band has previously been successfully replicated in the U.S. market, their popularity has skyrocketed in Japan, they also acquired the following new stabler in Southeast Asian markets like Thailand and South Korea. In Japan and throughout Asia, on the other hand, they continue to sell travel, resulting in a number of live release for the Japanese market.
Live At Budokan is one of the live release is intended for the Japanese market only. Gilbert left the band in 1997, and eventually reformed Racer X. Richie Kotzen, another artist and former guitarist shrapnel Poison, was brought in as a guitar player. Two studio albums were released by this lineup: Get Over It in 2000, and the actual size in 2001. Get More than that released in September 1999, in Japan, and produces "Superfantastic," multi-platinum number one hit in Japan. Mr. Big make a tour of the twenty-Japan followed by New Year's Eve 1999 show with Aerosmith at the Tokyo Dome in Tokyo. Get Over It 'was released in the United States in March 2000, followed by a work assignment in a short club "Roxy", California.
In 2001, Mr. Big released actual size in Asia. CD sat on the charts at number three spot and "Shine", which is number one, that. The song was also used as ending theme for the series Hellsing animasi.Namu n, tension has developed between Billy Sheehan and other members, and the band broke up in 2002.
On February 1, 2009 radio announcement "Burrn Koh Sakai's Presents: Heavy Metal Syndicate" contains a brief message from Mr. Big in Japan announced a reunion to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of their debut album. A press conference in Japan in February, which generated much excitement, and a tour of the country starting in June was announced, with shows in ten locations (including Budokan). They held their first reunion concert outside Japan at the Rock Cafe in Tallinn, Estonia in September 2009 to continue their tour. Warner Music Japan released a remastered copy of the four studio albums and a greatest hits CD and DVD. There are two bonus studio tracks on the album, new song "Next Time Around", and a cover of "Argent's Hold Your Head Up".
