U.S. President Barack Obama on Friday called the astronauts on the International Space Station to thank them for what they have done in the last mission of the program the U.S. space shuttle for 30 years.
President Obama spoke with the 10 crew of Atlantis and Space Station together. With a joke, Obama told his crew that he actually wanted to call to order pizza, do not expect to call into space.
Obama thanked the American national space agency (NASA) and all who have worked on the space shuttle program for years, saying they had helped America lead the space age. Say, the space program has always embody the spirit of adventure, exploration and courage of Americans.
Atlantis Commander Chris Ferguson said the mission now is "a multinational effort" and said all the crew at the station felt "honored and privileged" to represent their home countries.
Mission 13 days is full of "last," including recent work in the space of the space shuttle program, which was conducted Tuesday. On Wednesday, the crew will perform larger tasks, unload more than 4,000 kilograms of cargo carried into orbit Atlantis.
Returning to Earth next week, Atlantis will be retired and be with two other space shuttles will be on display at the museum.
NASA's space shuttle program stops to concentrate resources on the exploration of deeper space. NASA is working with several American commercial airlines to create a vehicle to replace the shuttle. Before the plane was there, the Russian Soyuz spacecraft will take American astronauts to and from the space station, while the Russian cargo spacecraft, Europe and Japan will continue its mission to bring supplies and disposal of waste to the station.
