Tokyo (ANTARA News / AFP) - An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter Scale northeastern Japan Friday surprise, shook the area devastated by the earthquake and tsunami in March, but there are no immediate reports of damage or casualties and no tsunami warning.
The quake struck at 03:22 local time (01:22 GMT) at a depth of 38 kilometers (24 miles), with the epicenter 18 kilometers from the city of Iwaki in Fukushima prefecture, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
Fukushima has become the world's worst nuclear crisis in 25 years since the tsunami in March destroy a nuclear power plant (NPP) in there, causing radiation leaks
into the soil, air and sea, and forced thousands to flee their homes.
Tokyo Electric Power Company, which crippled the nuclear power plant operator, said it had seen no additional problems caused by the latest quake, which also shook buildings in Tokyo.
Japan's Meteorological Agency measured the quake at 6.0 magnitude and depth is 50 kilometers.
The tsunami caused by the 9.0 magnitude earthquake last March to eliminate
the entire stretch of coast northeast of the country, killing more than 20,000 people, or disappeared.
Japan, which is located at the junction of four tectonic plates, has 20 percent of the strongest earthquakes recorded in the Earth every year.
