Green Day is an American punk rock band formed in 1987 in Berkeley, California. The band is a trio consisting of Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tre Cool. Green Day's highly acclaimed for their success in making return-known punk rock genre, along with Sublime, The Offspring, and Rancid. [1] [2] [3]
In 1990, along with their first drummer, John Kiffmeyer, Green Day recorded their first album, 39/Smooth. But in the same year, Tre Cool replaced replaced drummer John Kiffmeyer who came out because he wanted to go to college. Tre Cool then began to contribute to Green Day's second album, Kerplunk, and has become a permanent member ever since. Green Day's breakthrough album, Dookie, which was released in 1994, managed to get the status from the RIAA diamond and bring Green Day to the peak of their careers. However, in opposition with Dookie, Green Day's next three albums, respectively Insomniac, Nimrod, and Warning, failed to get success like Dookie. Though Insomniac and Nimrod managed to get platinum status and Warning get gold status, the third album is just showing their overall popularity plummeted. [4] It is their rock opera album in 2004, American Idiot, which returns their popularity, especially with fans from the younger generation. American Idiot has sold more than 5 million copies in the United States alone. [4] for their eighth album, 21st Century Breakdown, was released in 2009.
Green Day has sold more than 65 million copies of their albums worldwide with 24.639 million in the AA itself. [5] Green Day has won five Grammy Awards: Best Alternative Album for Dookie, Best Rock Album for American Idiot, Record of the Year for "Boulevard of Broken Dreams", Best Rock Album for the second time for the 21st Century Breakdown and Best Musical Show Album for American Idiot: The Original Broadway Cast Recording.
In 1987, friends Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt are aged 15 years and formed a band called Sweet Children. They first appeared on October 17, 1987 at Rod's Hickory Pit in Vallejo, California where mothers Armstrong's work. [6] In early 1988, Armstrong and Dirnt began working with Sean Hughes and former drummer Isocracy, John Kiffmeyer, or also known as Al Sobrante . Sean Hughes was acting as a bassist and drummer Kiffmeyer act as well as their business manager, handling schedules appearance and help them establish a base pengemar. As quoted film Punk's Not Dead, Armstrong says the band Operation Ivy (whose members Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman of Rancid) as a major influence for them and inspire them to form a band.
After Hughes left the Sweet Children in 1988, Larry Livermore, owner of Lookout! Records, saw them perform and decided to sign them to the label. In 1989, they recorded their first mini album, 1.000 Hours. Hours before the release of 1.000, they decided to stop using the name Sweet Children. Based on Livermore, this is to avoid confusion with another local band called Sweet Baby. [7] They also decided to use the name Green Day. [8]
Lookout! then release the debut studio album Green Day, 39/Smooth, in early 1990. Green Day also recorded two mini-albums in the same year, Slappy and Sweet Children. In 1991, Lookout! Records released a compilation album titled 1.039 / smoothed Out Slappy Hours, which combines the songs from the album along with a mini album 39/Smooth Slappy and 1,000 Hours. In late 1990, soon after their first nationwide tour, Sobrante left the East Bay area for college. The Lookouts drummer, Tre Cool, began to fill as a temporary replacement. When Sobrante decided to quit the band, the position as drummer for Green Day's Cool menjadai permanent. They toured most of the year 1992 and 1993. They've even performed in Europe. [11] Regarding their trials during the period, Armstrong spoke to Spin magazine in 1999,"I could not go back to the punk scene, whether We Were The Biggest Success in the World or The Biggest failure ... The only thing I Could do was get on my bike and go forward. [12] "
Post-contract with Reprise, they began working with their first major album, Dookie. Recorded in a span of three weeks and released in February 1994, [13] Dookie reap commercial success, helped by a very frequent MTV play for the song "Longview", "Basket Case", and "When I Come Around", where all the song reaches position 1 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart. In the same year, Green Day toured nationally with queercore band Pansy Division as an opening act. The album initially received a warm response, get a 4 out of 5 stars from Rolling Stone to review "In punk, the good stuff Actually unfolds and gains meaning as you listen without sacrificing any of its electric, Haywire immediacy. After a rest period in 1996, Green Day began work for their new album in 1997. From the outset, both Green Day and Cavallo agreed to make a different album than previous albums. [21] The result was Nimrod, an experimental album with a deviation from the typical punk-rock them. The album was released in October 1997. Green Day won the award for Outstanding Album (Warning), Outstanding Punk Rock / Ska Album (Warning), Outstanding Group, Outstanding Male Vocalist, Outstanding Bassist, Outstanding Drummer, Outstanding Songwriter and Outstanding Artist. Green Day released two compilation albums in a row, the International Superhits! Shenanigans in the 2001 and 2002. International Superhits and International Supervideos!, Which is packaged as a single package, managed to get certified platinum in the United States United States. Meanwhile, Shenanigans include some b-side tracks, including the song "Espionage" which became one of the movie soundtrack Austin Powers: The Spy Who shagged Me and a Grammy Award nomination for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. In the spring of 2002, following the Green Day Pop Disaster Tour with Blink-182 which was a larger success. In the summer of 2003, Green Day returned to the studio separately writing and recording material for a new album that has a title while Cigarettes and Valentines. [25] After completing 20 tracks, master recordings stolen from them by unscrupulous Studion unknown. Instead of re-recorded songs that were stolen, Green Day decided to cancel it and restart the album, with the consideration that the material was not sufficiently represent their best work. In September 2004, Green Day released their seventh album, American Idiot, which immediately succeeded in occupying the position of one on the Billboard charts, aided by the success of the album's first single, "American Idiot". Their world tour in 2005 ended up in Melbourne, Australia on December 17. On January 10, 2006, Green Day was awarded the People's Choice Award for Favorite Group.
On August 1, 2005, Green Day announced that they have the legal right to stop the master of the album pre-Dookie material from the Lookout! Records regarding unpaid royalties. [29] The album pre-Dookie material, which is no longer produced for one year, re-produced by the current Green Day's label, Reprise Records, on January 9, 2007. Green Day have time to do some other small projects after the success of American Idiot. They released the album under the band name Foxboro Hot Tubs entitled Stop Drop and Roll!. In 2008, the Foxboro Hot Tubs doing promo tour for the album in a small area of Tiny Bay Area. [31]
In an interview with Carson Daly, Garbage lead singer Shirley Manson revealed that Butch Vig would be a producer of Green Day's new album. [32] The range of 5 years between American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown is Green Day's longest career. They began working on new material since January 2006. In October 2007, Armstrong has written 45 songs, but they showed no signs of further progress until October 2008, when the two videos that menampilakn they're doing a recording with producer Butch Vig uploaded to YouTube. Wal-Mart refuses to sell the album with a Parental Advisory label and asked Green Day to release a censored edition. The members of Green Day did not want anything to change the lyrics of the album and responded by saying, "There is nothing dirty with our album [...] They want artists to censor their albums just to be sold there. We said no. We have never done it before. Do you think this is in 1953 or something. "[39] [40]
In 2009, they met with director Michael Mayer and several cast and crew of Spring Awakening musical events to create a stage version of the album American Idiot. American Idiot: The Musical opened at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in late 2009. The show tells the story that has been developed from the original album version, with new characters such as Will, Extraordinary Girl, and Favorite Son.
On 20 April 2010, American Idiot: The Musical opened on Broadway and Green Day released the soundtrack album with additional tracks titled "When It's Time". Single "When It's Time" has sold by the UK iTunes Store in June 2010. [41]
At the Spike TV Video Game Awards 2009, it was announced that Green Day is planned to have video-game version of their own Rock Band, Green Day: Rock Band, as the continued release of the previous series specific band, The Beatles: Rock Band. The game was released on June 8, 2010. On the second leg of 21st Century Breakdown World Tour, Green Day said they are in the process of writing new material. [42] In an interview with the magazine Kerrang!, Armstrong said about the possibility of a new album: "We made some demos in Berlin, in Stockholm, some again in the near Glasgow, and also in Amsterdam.
